I’m not sure how long the place has been around, but I recently heard about the Beerhive via twitter. It’s a rather small place in the Strip District, but the inside was clean and looked like it could be fairly new. The walls are decorated with artwork from local Pittsburgh artists, which looked like the could be purchased.
We arrived just before 3pm on Saturday. It looks like we caught the tail end of the strip district lunch crowd. The bar was completely full and all of the tables were full when we first arrived, but after drinking our first beers standing along the wall, 3 tables cleared out and some spaces opened up at the bar. There were also stairs heading up, so there may actually be more seating upstairs, but it didn’t look like that area was opened on this particular day.
The place is a craft beer bar with a large selection of micro-brews and import bottles and around 12 draft beers on tap. They also have a decent selection of bar food – burgers, sandwiches, salads, and wings with various homemade sauces. I also saw a large group of Beerhive growlers, so I’m sure you can purchase a growler of draft beer and bring it back in for refills.
I went with the maple bacon wings and my girlfriend had the steak hoagie with fries. The wings were pretty tasty – the sauce was basically maple syrup with chopped pieces of bacon – I would have preferred a little bit more bacon, but it was still good and something different than the standard wing sauce. I had a bite of Jessie’s steak sandwich and it was also good – topped with mushroom, cheese, onion, and jalapeno mayo. The best part was probably the fries.
The service was good and the beers were all good. Since I’m a big fan of craft beers and trying new beers, this is definitely a place I will try to check out again. According to some signs on the wall, it looks like they have a weekly trivia night and also a few open mic nights for musicians and comedians, which could be fun to check out.
So if you are ever in the Strip District looking for a place to drink some exotic beers, check out the Beerhive.
